Volker Bormuth has joint the LJP as an assistant professor at the faculty of physics at UPMC.

In his current research at the LJP, he investigates how mechanical stimuli received  by hair cell bundles change the neuronal dynamics in the brain. As a model system he studies the zebrafish and collaborates with  the whole brain activity imaging team at the LJP.

His former researches were dedicated to the dynamics of biological systems from the single molecule up to the cellular and system level. In single molecule experiments, he showed that molecular friction forces limit speed and efficiency of the molecular motor kinesin. He then became interested in sound perception by hair cell bundles in the inner ear and found that molecular friction forces effect sensitivity and frequency selectivity of this mechanoelectrical transducer.
