Abstract

Multi-scale modeling of transport in the gut, by Martin Garic.

The gastro intestinal tract is a complex biological system in which physical, bio-chemical and biological phenomena take place. Many processes (nutrient absorption, immune system sensing, drug delivery…) depend on the hydrodynamic transport of molecules or larger particles. This transport is caused by the muscles around the digestive tract and is complex. Our objective is to understand physical mechanisms controlling the transport of particles in the gastro-intestinal lumen and to develop models of the dispersion of particles along the tract and in the vicinity of the microstructures of the mucosa.

Growth and Directed Order in Tissue, by Joseph Ackermann.

In tissues, growth and motion often occur in an anisotropic environment. This anisotropy is often related to cell shape and polarity, as in the case for epithelial cells. In this talk, I will present several examples of anisotropic growths using both the elastic and the hydrodynamic formalisms.
