Abstract

Surface-attached bacterial communities (biofilms) are widespread and contribute to infections and biofouling in medical and industrial settings. The dense and highly heterogeneous biofilm environment has a strong impact on bacterial physiology and I will in particular discuss how adaptations to the physico-chemical conditions prevailing within biofilms favor the emergence of novel properties and impact biofilm dynamics.
