Biofilm under flow

Bacterial biofilms settle in a variety of environments including a large class of habitats made of immersed surfaces exposed to hydrodynamical flows. In the group, we address the question of the impact of the flow conditions on the development and the physical and biological properties of these adherent communities – a complex issue still poorly understood. We are particularly interested in understanding whether bacteria have developed flow sensors. For this, we work in various geometries of millifluidic channels to adjust and control the applied stresses.

 

We examine real time biofilm growth under different flow conditions in the various channels.

 

We aim at dissecting the role of the different components of the shear flow in the observed growth rate variations.
